Dear SNMI Members and Colleagues,

New team of office bearers of SNM, India got elected and took over at the recently concluded SNMI conference at Jaipur. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for expressing your trust and confidence in the new team. My heartfelt gratitude to all my colleagues for having me elected to this prestigious post. During the tenure of my term, it will be my endeavor to give my best shot. I am sure that with the constant support of all the esteemed members of the society, we can take the Society to newer heights! We will continue to carry forward the works initiated by the outgoing team and will always seek their guidance for future activities.

Our endeavor will be to work for strengthening of the society and betterment of the nuclear medicine fraternity, as a whole. The focus shall be on making our society a cohesive, well-knit and efficient body. Our efforts will be directed towards achieving enhanced co-operation between all regional chapters and the apex body, so that we move ahead as a well united force. All efforts will be made to remove discrepancies and provide updated data in the members' directory information. Close co-ordination with the Regulatory authorities for streamlining and simplification of procedures for recognition of centers and staff, will be a priority. Quality academic activities and training programmes encompassing the 'New modalities and the wider syllabi' to meet the demands placed by rapid technological advancements in the field of nuclear medicine needs to be made a reality. ICNM activities will be actively coordinated to strengthen the college and accomplish its mission.

Today, nuclear medicine encompasses a variety of imaging devices and fusion imaging has added a new dimension to early disease detection taking imaging to the molecular level. The growth of PET/ CT has the potential to propel Nuclear Medicine out of the shadows and to take it to a status equal to that of other disciplines. As interdisciplinary cooperation explores new procedures and treatments for the benefit of patient care, the contents of medical specialties evolve. Thus the specialty of nuclear medicine has to adapt to this evolution. The future strategy will also have to take into account the increasing role of nuclear medicine therapy and of pre-therapeutic dosimetry and the integration of PET/CT into radiotherapy planning systems. Nuclear imaging devices have also become valuable for conducting research on the biology of human diseases and for developing and testing new treatment approaches. Newer targeted therapies are being discovered and would need to be popularized. Although nuclear medicine has already made enormous contributions to biomedical research and disease management, its promise is only beginning to be realized in such areas as drug development, preventive health care, and personalized medicine. Briefly, the independent state of nuclear medicine as a medical specialty has to be continually redefined according to its interdependencies with other specialties. With this in mind, it is important to attract young investigators and physicians to nuclear medicine.

The incoming Executive Committee will continue to attend to specific missions. To achieve this and to strengthen our Society, I welcome both positive and negative feedback and urge you all to take an active part in the affairs of the Society.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
