Dear SNMI Members and
Colleagues,
It has been a great honor and privilege to serve as
SNMI President for the term 2009-2011. As 2011 comes
to a close, I am gratified to take note that under
the auspices of SNMI, the nuclear medicine fraternity
continues to progress toward better technology, better
practices, and better care for our patients. During
these two years, our team tried to make the SNMI more
vibrant. Indian Journal of Nuclear medicine (IJNM)
publication got resumed under the dynamism of Dr.
Anshu Rajnish Shrama. We are also thankful to the
Medknow Publishers for getting it indexed. Soon it
will have impact factor also. With the support of
Prof. Arun Malhotra, an education corpus has been
created out of the saved accumulate from the accounts
of 2008 AOCNMB held at New Delhi.

In year 2011, education
grants to attend International Conferences have been
provided to the deserving candidates and I am sure
the practice will remain continued. Shakuntla Krishnamurthy
Nuclear Hepatlogy award has also been constituted
out of the funds generously donated by Dr. GT Krishnamurthy
from USA. The first time awards will be conferred
during the forthcoming conference at Chennai. Official
website of the society has been revamped and given
a new look. It is also being updated regularly with
important information. We also tried to update the
SNMI members' directory with inputs from various members.
The members' directory till 30th November 2011 is
on the website.
Another area of
high importance in which we have made significant
strides is education. There is a pressing need to
ensure that nuclear medicine physicians, scientists,
and technologists receive standardized and continuing
education so that their skills continue to keep pace
with and advance at the same rapid speed with which
the molecular imaging field as a whole is evolving.
We are especially focused on attracting and engaging
young doctors/scientists. SNMI' core activities in
education, advocacy, and quality assurance aim to
improve the practice of its members are being achieved
through the Indian College of Nuclear Medicine (ICNM),
the academic wing of SNMI. ICNM is conducting regular
workshops/CMEs keeping focus on this objective of
education and learning. Even concept of awarding credit
hours, under the auspices of local medical councils/universities
has been introduced.
Technology continues to push our field in new directions
and open new pathways for providing optimal care to
patients. It is indeed an exciting time in the world
of imaging and in the field of nuclear medicine. Innovative
techniques in hardware and software offer advantages
for enhanced accuracy. New imaging agents, equipment,
and software will provide us with new opportunities
to improve current practices and to introduce new
technology into our clinical protocols. We also must
seize the opportunity to publicize and expand upon
the large body of clinically relevant data that provides
support for the diagnostic, prognostic, and incremental
value of nuclear medicine. Collaboration with national
and international societies and organizations is essential
for the accomplishment of our goals as we focus on
patient outcomes and ensure patient access to all
imaging studies. I am sure that the new leadership
will give a serious thought on these issues.
At the end of the year, and of my term as SNMI President,
I would like to express my gratitude to all SNMI office
bearers with whom I have had the privilege to work.
Thanks to everyone for extending cooperation and giving
me the opportunity to serve which made my resolve
for SNMI more robust & strong. This helped in keeping
the SNMI growing & its activities progressing. I express
deep sense of satisfaction for serving the SNMI for
two years term and feel much relaxed to see a vibrant,
responsive and responsible SNMI. The incoming President,
Dr. PK Pradhan, together with the new executive committee
will bring strong and balanced leadership to the society.
I look forward to working with the new team to further
the success of the Society for many years to come.
I apologize for hurting the sentiments of anyone inadvertently
or advertently, at any point of time during this stint.
